I simply never managed to separate Father John from the little boy I first met on the grammar school playground. Every time I think of you in that first-day getup, I am reduced to giggles. I do hope you’re sitting down. I’m not trying to lose a race to the grave by sending you on ahead. I’ve done something horrible. Stop shaking your head now. I’m serious. I broke several commandments and I need your guidance. Okay, maybe it was just the one, but it’s a whopper. I have sinned in ways I’m sure you can’t imagine.

We’ve been friends for a long time, John, but what I need now is my priest. Please read my words. Take them seriously, and come tomorrow prepared to be honest with me. I need to know if I’ve doomed my soul.

Do you remember my friend, Pookie? You must. We were inseparable from kindergarten through high school. You might remember we took a trip to Austin together to visit my fiancé in his senior year at UT. We went together, but I returned alone. All I could say when I returned was that she’d moved on to a different life. Now I’m going to tell you how different. You will have trouble believing my story, but it’s true. This is what happened last night.
